What is the diving baptism or the PADI DSD or Try Scuba of SSI?
This is the first step you can take to experience the marine world. It does not involve a certification, and it is recommended for people with little experience in the water.
At the age of 10 a child can have his “baptism”. There are other programs for children, like snorkeling or swimming pool programs from the age of 8.
How much does a diving baptism cost?
It may cost between 50 and 100 euros, depending on the geographic area, and it usually lasts about a half day.
What is a diving baptism (DSD or Try Scuba)?
Having filled out the required documentation, they will tell you about the state of the human body when underwater, how to maintain proper buoyancy, compensate your ears, how to prepare your gear and use it, and how to perform a basic series of exercises in very shallow water (either a swimming pool or close to the beach).
This will be just a general overview of the world of diving, but with an emphasis on safety. Once you have done the exercises and you know how to clean your water-filled mask or clean and recover a regulator that slipped out of your mouth, you will be ready to take a dive of no more than six meters (PADI DSD course) or 12 meters (SSI‘s TRY SCUBA).
With SSI, you will also learn how to share the air from a single diving unit in case of emergency.
Then, you can take another recreational dive of up to 12 meters, where you will only have to follow your instructor and enjoy the surroundings, as two immersions per voyage are typical for boat excursions.
Check with your center or instructor. Lastly, you can fill in your logbook, and record all your immersions. Your immersions must be signed and sealed by your instructor.
What certification will I get?
Although you won’t get a certification for it, this diving baptism authorizes you to dive anywhere in the world in the company of an instructor of diving professional to up to 12 meters in depth.
The diving baptism can be considered the first open water course for classroom purposes. So if you enjoyed the experience, imagine what you could do if you continue your training. Go for it!
