Getting out of trouble
Have you ever got a flat tire on some lonely mountain road, and you didn’t have the right wrench to change it? Big problem, right? Well, it’s the same thing with a dive whistle. It is an absolute must for any diver who places a premium on safety and, of course, his own life. A whistle is so cheap that not having one would be doubly reckless.
A dive whistle is an indispensable safety item in a diver’s gear. A whistle makes it quick and easy for you to warn people above water of any dangers. If you don’t have one, then you have to shout a lot, and maybe they’ll hear you and maybe they won’t, who knows. So why take the chance?
Very often, your jacket will have a built-in whistle. If you buy a second-hand jacket, check whether it has a whistle or not, though buying one costs as little as five euros.
Whistles come in different shapes and colors, but carrying and using one is so easy that anyone can do it.
There are more sophisticated mechanical models like whistles or sirens that plug into the jacket’s low-pressure hose system. Air pressure will activate them when a diver presses the button. These whistles produce striking sounds that resemble animal sounds, and they make themselves heard better than manual plastic ones. Some models can even be used underwater to alert a distracted partner. These are priced starting at 35 euros.
